Lugosi: The Forgotten King was originally released by Operator 13 Productions in 1985. The documentary was hosted by Forrest J Ackerman (Famous Monsters of Filmland) and included interviews with:
- Ralph Bellamy (Ghost of Frankenstein)
- Carroll Borland (Mark of the Vampire)
- John Carradine (Voodoo Man, Return of the Ape Man, The Black Sleep)
- Alex Gordon (Bride of the Monster)
In 2011, the Lugosi family approached the filmmakers about the possibility of releasing the documentary on DVD.
Work immediately began on updating the documentary to include new interviews with Lugosi co-stars Louise Currie (The Ape Man, Voodoo Man), Donnie Dunagan (Son of Frankenstein) Janet Ann Gallow (Ghost of Frankenstein), Anne Jeffreys (Zombies on Broadway, Genius at Work), and Carla Laemmle (Dracula), as well as Terry Castle, David Frankham, Sara Karloff, and Bela Lugosi, Jr.
Operator 13 Productions hopes to release the DVD in early 2013. Watch this space!
